Looking to pick up a new soft top surfboard (also known as a foam surfboard, or foamie)? We’ve got you covered with a thorough breakdown of the best boards on the market.
Important Considerations
When picking out the right soft top surfboard, you’ll want to keep these factors in mind:
- Your skill level
- While many soft top boards are designed with beginners in mind, some more aggressively shaped softies are better suited for intermediate and advanced riders.
- Size and density relative to your height and weight
- Soft top boards come in a variety of lengths. Beginners typically choose longer boards, and your height does come into play too (taller riders will prefer extra length). That said, buoyancy is really the key factor in finding your perfect ride…
- Surfboard buoyancy is measured by the volume of the board. Larger riders will want a more buoyant (higher volume) board to support their weight. Beginner riders will want even more buoyancy for a more forgiving ride.
- Check out our Sizing Guide to find the perfect size for your height, weight, and ability level.
- Warranty
- If you find yourself with a dinged up board or snapped leash, is the manufacturer going to stand behind their product? While some surfboard companies go above and beyond with their warranty and customer service, others are notorious for leaving you high and dry (no pun intended).

My story with South Bay Board Co. customer service
The South Bay Board Co. customer service team is legendary. I took my South Bay Soft Top Surfboard out on a particularly nasty low tide day, and got tied up in a kelp bed.
I quickly went for “kook of the day” on a wave, my leash snapped, and I had to call it a day. When I got home I shot them a message on Amazon seeing if I could purchase a new leash, and I had a new leash on my doorstep in 24 hours – for free! Check out this Amazon message from their team:
That level of customer service is really exceptional, and has made me a South Bay Board Co. fan for life. Even if you’re beyond the beginner range that their flagship soft top board is designed for, do yourself and pick up one of their softtops to have for newbie guests when they come into town.
